Choose the panel for the actual aim
Quick answer
Solid, slatted and open panel styles provide different screening and appearances. A photograph does not tell you how the whole fence performs at your site. Decide how much privacy is needed, the intended height and whether maintenance access is available. The posts and installation should suit the chosen unit and exposure. Avoid a universal claim that one decorative design is storm-proof. Ask the business to explain the product specification and complete installed scope rather than compare panel prices alone.
For privacy, consider how the boundary is viewed from the house, seating areas and adjoining ground, rather than judge only the panel standing in a showroom. Slats and decorative openings can change sightlines at different angles. Agree which side faces each area and how later care is carried out. The product choice is one part of the result; actual levels and installation position still need confirmation.
Replacement dimensions and compatibility
A nominal six-foot panel description is not enough to establish fit. Actual width, height, thickness and the post or fixing system matter. Have the business confirm measurements and suitability before you order multiple units. Existing posts may be damaged or misaligned, and a new panel should not hide that uncertainty. Ask whether a narrow final bay needs a manufacturer-approved alteration or a different construction. Customer-supplied materials need clear suitability and warranty arrangements, especially where the existing run is not a standard system.
Sloping gardens and gaps below the fence
Panel runs can be stepped or arranged with other details to manage ground changes. Discuss the appearance from both sides and how gaps affect pets, privacy and maintenance. Ground-contact details should suit the material; packing soil against ordinary fence timber can create an unsuitable arrangement. A fence is not automatically a retaining wall. Ask the installer to explain the complete level detail and whether another ground or retaining solution is needed. One panel height at the first bay does not describe the whole slope.
Posts and gravel-board details
Panels, posts, fixings and gravel boards should form a compatible system. A manufacturer’s product guidance can explain the components, but the installation still needs site assessment. Jacksons’ post information is a reference example rather than a chosen supplier or warranty offered here. Ask whether retained supports are sound and how the lower edge is protected for the actual material. Do not assume adding a gravel board allows any panel to hold back raised soil.

Fit, access and the boundary decision
Give the run length, existing supports, approximate panel dimensions and access limitations without dismantling an unstable fence. Ask the business to assess posts and fixings before pricing panels alone. Different spans or ground levels may need an agreed layout rather than a standard panel forced into place.
At a Bury garden or frontage, confirm who can authorise the work and whether neighbour access is needed. West Suffolk heritage/frontage checks may be separate from that agreement. Existing walls, vegetation and drainage should remain part of the scope; replacing a panel should not silently change the boundary position or direct water onto adjacent land.

Installed panel costs
Ask whether the quote includes…
Define the quantity, actual specification, support work, removal, disposal, access, cutting or special bays, VAT and finish. A supplied panel price differs from a complete installation. Ask about damage to retained posts and how additional work is approved. If comparing quotations, use the same product grade and installed extent rather than a general label such as premium panel. Clarify who handles delivery damage and customer-supplied products.
- Actual panel specification and fit assessment.
- Retained-post checks or new supports.
- Removal, waste, narrow bays, VAT and finishing.
Care and later replacement
Follow the supplier’s care and treatment requirements for the actual material. Keep planting and stored items arranged so ordinary inspection and maintenance remain possible. Ask about expected timber movement, appearance changes and warranty conditions. If a unit loosens or a post moves, obtain assessment rather than simply add more screen weight. For an enquiry, provide postcode, panel count, current dimensions if safely known and photographs from ordinary access. Suitable local help is reviewed separately from any booking.
